It think of the
wonders God did in France's past, reportedly through the “French Prophets.” These Calvinistic Huguenots were said
to have walked in immense power, though their ministry was also often marked by violent attitudes and presumptuousness. Stacey
Campbell believes, “Initially this [movement] was good, and much good fruit came from it. Revival broke out, and thousands
of conversions occurred as a result.” Historian Eddie L. Hyatt described the great anointing on this early Protestant
church, saying, “Children as young as three years old both prophesied and delivered discourses
in perfect, fluent French even though this was not their native tongue. On one occasion, a fourteen-month-old child, who previously
had never spoken, suddenly began exhorting 'to the Works of Repentance' in a loud, childish voice.” Such signs and wonders
were no doubt needed in France, and had the potential to draw many people to a new level of holiness.
The Huguenots
were heavily persecuted though, and according to Patrick Johnston and Jason Mandryk, this was a major “contributing
factor leading to the explosion of the French Revolution.” “Many [Huguenots] were slaughtered and 200,000 fled
to other lands – to their enrichment and France's impoverishment.” The evangelical conscience of the land was
basically removed by the Church's opponents, paving the way for a dreadful conflict to ensue.
I pray Lord
that you will redeem all that was lost during the attacks on the Huguenots, and let their spiritual descendants return to
evangelize this country. Renew a prophetic spirit in the church of France, and let it manifest with greater fruit of the Spirit
this time around. Let the awe of your deeds sweep over this nation again, and in wrath remember mercy!
